In Jewish tradition, Lilith and Naamah are demonesses associated with the death of newborns and the seduction of men in their sleep. Lilith is believed to originate from the Assyrian lilitu—a winged night demon with long, wild hair. Her name later became linked to the Hebrew word for “night,” reinforcing her image as a nocturnal spirit.

Legend portrays Lilith as Adam’s first wife, created before Eve. From her union with Adam came Asmodeus and other demons. Though this story does not appear in the Bible, it was later justified through interpretations of Genesis 5:3, suggesting Adam fathered beings before Eve. Lilith is also associated with the “terror by night” mentioned in Psalm 91.

Naamah’s origins are less clear, but she is likewise depicted as a seductive night spirit in later Jewish lore.
